There is a joke in my family that almost every day is a celebration. We are a very multi-cultural group from either marriage or friends who are a part of our extended family.
The Chinese New Year in particular, means so much to me, especially in these troubled times, because even though we’re all in different time zones or in far off countries, today is a day full of phone calls, texts, messages, and Skype chats. It’s a day I’ve come to associate with a smile and memories of previous years and a reminder that family has no borders.
I’ll never forget the first time my family and I watched the New Year’s parade, put up our paper lanterns, laughed and ate delicious food, and filled our eyes with the colors and happiness the day brought.
Another, equally precious day, was when one of my students gave me a Chinese Knot for happiness and a paper-cut he had made with the greatest of care. He was a very quite student so hearing him say, “Xin Nian Kuai Le!” (Happy Chinese New Year) with a small bow in his severe and melodic voice paired with a rare and endearing smile will forever be a part of me.
This year with my family, we followed the tradition of long conversations and joy at what the day brings. This evening we took out the red envelopes we found at a nearby restaurant where we give each other something precious: a wish for our loved ones.
So I’d like to end this with a wish for you too: may your days be filled with grand doses of happiness.
