Summary

This manga adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is just...beyond words! It’s a visually stunning masterpiece that incorporates all of the classic elements of the original work, but also adds a unique, artistic perspective that elevates the story on another level. The artists managed to capture the essence of the characters and the supreme complexity of the original novel’s plot without making the manga overwhelming.
I truly loved the portrayal of the characters and the environment that was created. Each character was drawn with such great care to bring out the inner depths of their personas. There was also an extensive amount of research performed on the locations and background environments throughout The Count of Monte Cristo (such as Château d'If).
Readers learn in the afterword that artist, Crystal “Silvermoon” Chan, visited these real life locations and made the necessary adjustments to be as historically accurate as possible. This also allows readers to have a better grasp of the Count’s world and we get to experience locations and details that we may not otherwise have a chance to. Attention to such details truly transcends the page for they weave a greater sense of realism and that truly establishes The Count of Monte Cristo Manga Classics as a prominent work of literature.
Overall, the vividness of it all placed me right in the middle of all the action. The Count is a formidable piece to adapt, yet all the endeavors the artists, staff, and team at UDON’s Manga Classics made this entire work very comprehensive and enjoyable for the modern generation.
A must read and much needed addition to any literary collection.
