Character Spotlight
Willa Forsythe from Roseanna M. White's A Song Unheard is a strong individual who has survived based on her willpower and through the notes of her violin. She is a very compelling character with realistic characteristics that draw you in to experience her life story from the very beginning of the book. I absolutely love that Willa was able to express herself through the power of music. This was especially captured in the line:
"I picked up that battered old violin that day, and it felt as if . . . as if I'd finally found a part of myself I hadn't known was missing." (pg. 70)
Throughout A Song Unheard, notes of Willa's life and personality drift from page. You catch the arpeggios of joy and despair alongside with the extended notes of silent hope and faith. By the end of the book, Willa's song completely envelops you. I truly enjoyed Roseanna's writing style; I found it to be a lyrical collection of words that rose from the page and made readers experience and hear the words rather than just basing the reading experience on visuals. This was the first work I've written by her and now I will make it a point to clear some shelf space so that I can read more of Roseanna's works.
If A Song Unheard could be adapted into a film or television series, ideally by the BBC *cough cough*, I think it would be wonderful to have Emilia Clarke bring Willa's character to life.
In accordance to FTC regulation, I wanted to disclose that my reviews and thoughts of the book are my own. While I received a complementary copy from JustRead Publicity Tours for the blog tour, I wrote my review of my own accord after writing the character spotlight.
