Hello everyone!
I hope you're all having a great week so far. Today we're featuring Across A Broken Shore by Amy Trueblood. I found the premise of the book absolutely compelling since I have a special love for historical fiction works and I'm happy to say I was absolutely taken by this wonderful story.
Wilhelmina “Willa” MacCarthy is an eighteen-year-old who is weighed by the expectations of her Irish-Catholic family to be a nun and take her vows. From the first page, author Amy Trueblood is able to render Willa's emotional journey in an elegant, personable manner that readers can connect with. Willa is simultaneous strong and independent as she pursues her zest for the medical field while bringing her soft demeanor with her family to the surface. Additionally, I loved the metaphor of the Golden Gate bridge. It heralded past customs and practices into a new generation where Willa, like the bridge, came of age through the process of building her own persona and following the yearning to pursue her dreams against all odds.
All in all, Amy Trueblood's Across A Broken Shore reflects the spirit of an era whose timeless qualities ripples to our contemporary times. At the end of the book, we look up and find ourselves standing on the riverbank of the present divided by the ebbing flow of time where the past whispers its histories on the opposite shore.

The last thing eighteen-year-old Wilhelmina “Willa” MacCarthy wants is to be a nun. Each day she sneaks away to help Doctor Katherine Winston in her medical clinic in San Francisco’s Richmond District.
Keeping secrets from her family only becomes more complicated when Willa agrees to help the doctor at a field hospital near the new bridge being built over the Golden Gate.
