Spellhacker

Regulated magic.

A botched heist.

A world changing conspiracy.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

After reading M.K. England's debut The Disasters, I was so ecstatic to read their latest work, Spellhacker. As with their previous work, I was absolutely transported into a world of high fantasy and adventure that champions the spirit of YA literature. An element that I especially liked about the Spellhackers was the diverse characterization and identity representation that England wove throughout the story.

Let's meet our Spellhackers:

First there's Diz - a tough gal with sharp barbs and hilarious jokes who is secretly afraid of losing her friends after the death of her parents. But by never telling her friends this, it won't happen...will it? Our second Spellhacker, Remi was an absolutely precious character! Their skills in weaving Kyrkarta magic (maz) paired with their enchanting personality, made them an instant favorite for me. Then, Jaesin and his 'Dad Mode' protective personality definitely endeared me to the story; that and his cooking ability. Finally, there was a #fiercefemale you always want to have on your side: Ania. What an absolute force to reckon with!

In terms of world-building, I thoroughly enjoyed voyaging through Kyrkarta space and learning about the different kinds of maz and how the varying types can be used for distinct spells and creations. England certainly demonstrated her maz through her word-weaving capabilities.

Spellhackers was certainly a riveting ride in a futuristic world filled to the brim with YA fantasy that reminds me of why I love reading works of this genre. If you want to read an out of this world adventure, this is your next work to turn to!

BOOK INFORMATION

Spellhacker

by M.K. England Publisher: HarperCollins Children's Books Release Date: January 21st 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

From the author of The Disasters, this genre-bending YA fantasy heist story is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.

In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.

Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.

But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.

No pressure.

AUTHOR INFORMATION

M.K. England is an author and YA librarian who grew up on the Space Coast of Florida and now calls rural Virginia home. When they’re not writing or librarianing, MK can be found drowning in fandom, rolling dice at the gaming table, digging in the garden, or feeding their video game addiction. They love Star Wars with a desperate, heedless passion. It’s best if you never speak of Sherlock Holmes in their presence. You’ll regret it.

The Disasters is their debut novel. Follow them at www.mkengland.com.
