Vespertine

The words of the dead forever follow us.

They do not need to be spoken for their eyes tell all as their still bodies hold secrets the living have yet to learn.

No one knows the dead more than Artemisia, who is training to be a Gray Sister in a world where spirits turn to malevolent beings if their spirits are not prepared and cleansed to cross over. When an act of violence upon her sacred convent causes Artemisia to turn to an ancient spirit she finds herself possessed with a higher, uncontrollable power that threatens to consume her. The walls of her life as a Gray Sister in training suddenly shatter and Artemisia's fate begins to wander down a path that borders on salvation and destruction.

In Vespertine, Margaret Rogerson's readers are taken to a world of action that sets your nerves on a knife's edge as Artemisia's life wanders through the pages in a narration that suits the pacing of her latest work.

A few of my favorite things:

I love Rogerson's consistent dedication to her craft and characters that she molds to suit the nature of the works themselves. Vespertine differs from the author's previous works since it takes on an almost Gothic approach to me to encapsulate the recluse nature of Artemisia, the atmosphere of her world, and the factual approach of the story.

Rogerson was able to weave in one of my favorite elements: the morally gray! The revenant (which is rumored to be evil incarnate of course) ended up having a surprising exchange with Artemisia that provided the story with an added element of belief and truth.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Book Title: Vespertine

Author: Margaret Rogerson

Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books

Release Date: October 5, 2021

Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal,

Book Description:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Sorcery of Thorns and An Enchantment of Ravens comes a thrilling new YA fantasy about a teen girl with mythic abilities who must defend her world against restless spirits of the dead.

The dead of Loraille do not rest.

Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a ravenous hunger for the living. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who trade whispers about her scarred hands and troubled past.

When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard. Wielding its extraordinary power almost consumes her—but death has come to Loraille, and only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a high relic, has any chance of stopping it. With all knowledge of vespertines lost to time, Artemisia turns to the last remaining expert for help: the revenant itself.

As she unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets, and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface, she discovers that facing this enemy might require her to betray everything she has been taught to believe—if the revenant doesn’t betray her first.
