A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world--but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination.
Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she's blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks--and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday.
But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.
It's then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organization: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart--an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests--or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.
Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and Neil Gaiman, this fast-paced plot and imaginative world has a fresh new take on magic that will appeal to a new generation of readers.

Review
"What happens if I close my eyes?"
"You miss the fun."
In her Nevermoor series, author Jessica Townsend realized the full potential of the middle grade genre by crafting a story filled with the timeless elements of imagination, originality, and pure heart.
Morrigan was an absolutely endearing character and it was wonderful to see her development. In the first book, Morrigan sees herself as the curse everyone claims she is which causes her to have little self-worth. Yet from the moment that she sets foot in Nevermoor, Morrigan gradually starts to embrace Jupiter's mantra to "Step boldly!" through life. It was great to see how those two words radicalized Morrigan's world and opened a greater doorway to allow all of Nevermoor's magic to pass through. This magic came in the form of the larger than life personality of the Magnificat, Fenestra, to the family and friends she makes in this creative world.
As I finished, Wundersmith I sat for a moment to think of an apt description of Townsend's writing. To quote Nevermoor Townsend "didn't just have a knack, she had a gift" of engaging readers through her spirited storytelling that I didn't want to miss a moment of. Just like Hogwarts calls to all, Nevermoor will forevermore be a part of your reading experience.
Thank you for joining us again at The Reading Corner for All. I hope you'll find this series as a wonderful reminder to "Step boldly!" on your own adventures.
